A Letter of Gratitude from Former Intern Allison Palacios (2016-2017)

“My name is Allison Marcell Palacios and I am from El Salvador. I had the most wonderful experience being part of Amity in 2016-2017.

I would like to share some things I learned, and that I can assure that changed my life forever. I learned:

  • how big and beautiful the world is, and that languages don’t have to be a barrier.
  • to open my mind and understand that there are better, new ways to teach and learn. To learn what I was doing wrong, and begin to do it right.
  • that there are many people in other countries that are agents of change too and when we join together, we can do something wonderful and powerful. We are part of something bigger than ourselves. We can always be better, and our community can create change. Community is not just living in the same place or area, but about truly working together to succeed
  • how to be a better teacher and understand my students needs, and how to handle all sorts of teaching situations.
  • the importance of giving to the generations that follow ours, and how important the opportunity to learn is, no matter differences and limitations.
  • that self motivation is a key to success, both inside and out of the classroom.
  • that I need to fight in order to achieve my goals
  • that hopelessness, laziness and defeatism is not a chose; we need to persevere in order to keep going and develop ourselves to our greatest potential.

We can’t keep the light that we have in our lives only for ourselves, we should share our light with others and help them on their path to a bright future. My Amity experience showed me that now is the time to give back to my community, I cannot wait to share what I have learned, and all the hope I acquired during my time in the USA.

AMITY MEANS TO ME: opportunity, hope, learning, growth, maturity, culture, love and hard work.

I gained a new and wonderful family, great friends from around the world, a new culture and a new perspective of life. Amity is a great chance to learn, grow up and change the world starting with our own community. If I had the chance, I would do it again and recommend the experience to everyone!

Thank you, Amity!”

This experience changed my life! Now, I have more dreams and some other goals. I'm so thankful for everything that I've learned. I want to continue growing as a human and as a teacher. The Amity program is one the best things that ever happened to me." - Michelle, 2018-2019 Intern

We have been working with Amity for several years. Learning about different cultures, communities, traditions, music, arts, dances and more, helps our students to see the world as a global place fostering diversity and respect. Having a second adult in the classroom helps our teachers to be able to have more individualized attention to students and work on small groups. Amity has been a wonderful organization to work with, reliable and accessible, bringing highly qualified young people to work in our school."- Maria Buceta Miller, Amity School Coordinator, John Stanford International School

“I thought I'd share what happened on my birthda “I thought I'd share what happened on my birthday, which is representative of my internship life and my life with my host family so far!

My host family prepared a big box of doughnuts for me to take to school to share with my colleagues! While I was handing out the doughnuts, I wished everyone a happy Lunar New Year and they wished me a happy birthday. The students at school also came to say happy birthday to me during break time and even prepared cards for me!

1/25 was the fourth day of Chinese New Year, so my host family held a " Lunar New Year themed" birthday party for me. We invited other interns to celebrate with us. I was asked to rest in my room while my host family and intern friends decorated the dining room and prepared the food! They even decorated my cake! It was a big surprise for me and made me feel so happy!”

Happy belated birthday, Masako! 🥳We’re happy to see that you’re enjoying your internship and having a wonderful time with your host-family and fellow interns!

What these four wonderful people brought me is beyond words, I will never forget what they mean to me.
More than the Amity program, the beginning of a lifetime adventure...
I adore you so. 💚🌈

I want to share this new experience that I had with my Host Family as well with another Intern Laia from Spain. We went skiing and I could say that was one of the most challenging and fun things I’ve done because I never practiced skiing before and my host mother and Laia taught me how to do it."

Way to go, Glenda and Laia!⛷️❄️
