Hosting an Intern

Host School Requirements

Mentoring and Support

The Host School’s Principal oversees the assignment, follows the program guidelines and internship plan (T/IPP) and assigns a staff member as:

  • Supervising Teacher – acts as a mentor to the intern throughout the assignment; works closely with the intern to develop curriculum, lesson plans, and classroom activities; evaluates performance and provides regular feedback.

  • School Coordinator – Oversees the assignment as a whole, ensures program requirements are met; recruits and monitors Host Families; assists the intern in establishing social contacts inside and outside of school; keeps in regular contact with Amity Institute; serves as a mediator in any sensitive situations with the school or Host Family.  Schools may choose one staff member to play both roles, or ask a member of the PTA to act as Amity Coordinator.

Transportation:

  • Transportation to and from the nearest airport, train station, or bus depot upon arrival and departure

  • Local transportation to be arranged to and from school, in the form of a ride with the Host Family, staff member or other parent, school bus, or local bus pass. Interns are responsible to arrange their own transportation in their personal time.

Host Family Recruitment

The following applies to all Host Family living arrangements:

  • Free room and board for the intern should be arranged with a family or individual in the community or on-campus housing

  • Intern must have a private bedroom

  • Intern can live with multiple families, but each family should host for a minimum of eight weeks

  • Interns should not live with the Supervising Teacher or the School Coordinator

  • Amity Institute provides support for recruitment with materials/advice

Housing information must be submitted to Amity and the intern at least three weeks prior to arrival.

Steps to Inviting an Amity Intern

  1. Complete the Intern Request Form.

  2. Email it back to Amity.

  3. Receive applications of qualified applicants.

  4. Contact applicants directly for skype/phone interview.

  5. Choose a candidate and return the Invitation Form to Amity.

  6. Wait for Amity’s confirmation of intern’s acceptance.

  7. Maintain regular communication with Amity’s School Liaison Officer and intern to ensure that any relevant information and documentation is passed on to Amity Institute.

This experience changed my life! Now, I have more dreams and some other goals. I'm so thankful for everything that I've learned. I want to continue growing as a human and as a teacher. The Amity program is one the best things that ever happened to me." - Michelle, 2018-2019 Intern

We have been working with Amity for several years. Learning about different cultures, communities, traditions, music, arts, dances and more, helps our students to see the world as a global place fostering diversity and respect. Having a second adult in the classroom helps our teachers to be able to have more individualized attention to students and work on small groups. Amity has been a wonderful organization to work with, reliable and accessible, bringing highly qualified young people to work in our school."- Maria Buceta Miller, Amity School Coordinator, John Stanford International School

“I thought I'd share what happened on my birthda “I thought I'd share what happened on my birthday, which is representative of my internship life and my life with my host family so far!

My host family prepared a big box of doughnuts for me to take to school to share with my colleagues! While I was handing out the doughnuts, I wished everyone a happy Lunar New Year and they wished me a happy birthday. The students at school also came to say happy birthday to me during break time and even prepared cards for me!

1/25 was the fourth day of Chinese New Year, so my host family held a " Lunar New Year themed" birthday party for me. We invited other interns to celebrate with us. I was asked to rest in my room while my host family and intern friends decorated the dining room and prepared the food! They even decorated my cake! It was a big surprise for me and made me feel so happy!”

Happy belated birthday, Masako! 🥳We’re happy to see that you’re enjoying your internship and having a wonderful time with your host-family and fellow interns!

What these four wonderful people brought me is beyond words, I will never forget what they mean to me.
More than the Amity program, the beginning of a lifetime adventure...
I adore you so. 💚🌈

I want to share this new experience that I had with my Host Family as well with another Intern Laia from Spain. We went skiing and I could say that was one of the most challenging and fun things I’ve done because I never practiced skiing before and my host mother and Laia taught me how to do it."

Way to go, Glenda and Laia!⛷️❄️
